Dwight Leeper - District Governor Elect

Dwight has been a Rotarian with the Fanwood-Scotch Plains Club since 2002. His philosophy, borrowed from the Boy Scouts, is “we’re here to leave the world a better place than we found it.” In service to that, Dwight served two terms as Rotary Club President, two terms as Membership Chair, served as Deputy Governor and Assistant Governor. He is a graduate of the Leadership Institute, a Paul Harris Fellow, and most recently a facilitator at Multi-District PETS.

While Rotary has been Dwight’s primary service focus, he has been a long time parishioner at All Saints’ Episcopal Church where he served as Warden for two years and ten years as Stewardship chair. He has also been active as an advisor to the Boy Scouts.

Dwight was born in New York City, living his “Wonder Bread” years in Stuyvesant Town on 16th Street. Following a car accident his first day of high school, Dwight attended Williston Academy in Massachusetts. Upon graduation, he travelled to Allegheny College in Pennsylvania “on the five year program”. Dwight took a year’s sabbatical and hiked the 2,000 Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. Returning to Allegheny, he continued his major studies in philosophy, adding radio and TV for a practical future. Graduating with a B.A. in Philosophy, He returned to his roots in New York and to what became a 24 year career in advertising, twenty of which were with Grey Global Group. Choosing “an act of great courage and incredible foolishness”, Dwight left the advertising business in 2001 to join Merrill Lynch as financial advisor to pursue a life long passion for personal finance. Since September 2001, he has built his business from the Westfield office of Merrill Lynch, to be joined recently by his oldest daughter Elizabeth. "Clients like her better," he says.

Robert, Dwight’s son, is following his footsteps at Allegheny as a junior, majoring in music, and Kathleen, a rising senior at the Academy for Information Technology, is a Union County track star.

In addition to hiking the Appalachian Trail, Dwight bicycled the 2,000 mile Alaska Highway, and canoed the 1,800 mile Yukon River from Whitehorse in the Yukon Territories to Russian Mission, near the Bering Sea. He’s an instrument rated private pilot and flies his Cherokee Six to his future retirement home in Camden, Maine. When not on his bicycle around town, he makes do with a Harley for fun. Dwight loves to travel and most recently has visited Jordan, Turkey, Sicily and Egypt.
